A Path Less Travelled: Cincinnati Nature Center
With ample opportunities to explore new and exciting places during my summer in Ohio, I found myself frequenting one place in particular, and not simply because it was nearby. Among the many miles of trails, ponds, meadows, and varying terrain, the Cincinnati Nature Center became my place of peacefulness and quiet. I spent many hours on the perimeter trail, many afternoons sitting in bird blinds, and many pocketfuls of quarters on feed for the turtles and fish. Not once did I find myself without something to do and I never did mind returning to areas or activities I had already done.
The Nature Center boasts one of the best visitor centers I have ever seen, with a massive library and reading area, educational area, gift shop, and rescue animals. Outside the visitor center, you can find dozens of miles of hiking trails that wind through ponds, marshes, and meadows. The perimeter trail that I mentioned, runs around the entire Nature Center for nearly 11 miles with approximately 1200 feet of vertical gain. I likely visited the Center every other weekend and still, in 5 months, didn't come close to hiking all of the trails. My favorite activity, above all else, is feeding the massive snapping turtle that lives in the ponds just behind the visitor center. This nature center offered me exactly what I needed during a busy summer; a quiet getaway and a chance to recharge my batteries without having to drive far away.
